The Nonprofit Federation launched its first ever comprehensive benchmarking survey, which will provide Nonprofit Federation members with data on how nonprofit organizations are performing relative to their counterparts through their use of various marketing channels.
"We developed this survey to help Nonprofit Federation members understand how their fundraising campaigns and marketing activities compare in terms of nonprofit sector norms," said Senny Boone, executive director of the Nonprofit Federation. "We encourage all nonprofits to participate in this first-of-its-kind Nonprofit Federation survey. We hope that it will not only fill a critical information gap, but will also become a valuable tool to help nonprofit organizations evaluate their current practices and identify areas of improvement as they seek to raise money and build awareness."
The survey, which contains 37 questions on a variety of topics — including renewals, acquisitions, online fundraising, and mobile marketing — is now open on the Nonprofit Federation’s website and will run through April 25, 2008.
Survey results will be first available at the 2008 Nonprofit Federation Leadership Summit, which will take place June 3-5 at the Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach, FL. For information on the Summit, please visit www.nonprofitfederation.org.

The Nonprofit Federation in partnership with MobileCause, is excited to announce that the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Food for the Hungry, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City will be the participants in the first phase of a pilot program that is aimed at helping Nonprofit Federation members increase opportunities to raise funds through mobile marketing.
"We are always looking to educate our members on the latest fundraising techniques, and although text messaging is not a new technology, the idea of utilizing it to communicate quickly with potential donors is only just now emerging," said Senny Boone, executive director of the Nonprofit Federation. "Through our work with MobileCause on this pilot, the Nonprofit Federation hopes both to connect with a new generation of donors and to illustrate the power of text messaging in reaching donors quickly and effectively."
"We have an unprecedented opportunity to connect with not only a new generation of donors, but existing constituents in a new way," said Hendre Coetzee, CEO of Mobile Cause. "Working with the Nonprofit Federation of the DMA allows so many organizations to have access to this new methodology of donor development and acquisition."
- On April 23 at 1 p.m. EDT, the Nonprofit Federation will hold a teleconference with its members to discuss the initial results. To register for the teleconference, visit www.nonprofitfederation.org. In November, the Federation will release a full case study.
The Nonprofit Federation is now seeking members who are interested in participating in phase two of the pilot, which will commence during the summer. If your organization is interested in participating and sharing results, please contact Jill Murphy at jmurphy@the-dma.org.

The Direct Marketing Association and the Nonprofit Federation are proud to introduce Direct Marketing Facts and Figures in the Nonprofit Industry, a relevant and important research product for the entire nonprofit community.
This extensive report focuses on four distinct areas of the nonprofit sector: Charities and Membership Organizations; Education Services; Museums, Botanical Gardens, and Zoos; and Religious Organizations. These four areas are further analyzed by eight channels:
- Catalog
- Direct mail
- Insert media
- Commercial email
- Internet marketing
- Print media (newspaper and magazines)
- Broadcast media (DR Television an DR Radio)
- Telephone marketing
To hone in even further on how direct marketing is used throughout the nonprofit industry, each chapter looks at three key areas: DM Advertising Expenditures, DM-Driven Sales, and DM-Driven employment, with each of these categories broken out by market and intent of offer. The market portion compares business and consumer markets; intent of offer compares retail purchase, lead generation, direct order, and fundraising.
To obtain copies of the report, available in electronic or print format, visit the DMA Bookstore. Introductory price is $79.00 for DMA and Nonprofit Federation members and $149 for nonmembers (Chapter pricing available when purchasing electronic copy). Members must login to obtain member discount.

The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation’s (DMEF) announced that its Don Kuhn Fund for Research and Education has expanded. Now, in addition to assisting college students whose focus is on nonprofit direct marketing, DMEF will also help to advance the careers of entry-level direct marketing professionals in the nonprofit sector.
According to DMEF President Terri L. Bartlett, "The Don Kuhn Fund was established in January 2006 in honor of the late direct-response fundraising pioneer, Don Kuhn. Traditionally, in addition to providing funding for research, the fund has provided college scholarships to those students committed to exploring multichannel direct marketing in the nonprofit sector. But with today’s announcement, the fund is expanding to help advance the early careers of those in the nonprofit direct marketing field."
The inaugural recipient of the Don Kuhn Fund’s entry-level scholarship is Kate Conner, donor relations manager of Piedmont Park Conservancy, Atlanta, GA. Conner will receive $1,500 from the fund to cover her admission, travel, and lodging expenses for attendance at the Nonprofit Federation of DMA’s 2008 Washington Nonprofit Conference, which will take place January 24-25 at the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington DC.
